Making Better Decisions: How Scripture Guides Us
Decision-making can often feel overwhelming. Whether big or small, the choices we make daily shape our lives in profound ways. Thankfully, the Bible offers clear guidance on how to approach decisions, especially when we seek wisdom and clarity from God. Through prayer, reflection, and a deep understanding of God’s Word, we can make choices rooted in His truth.
Here are some key scriptures that guide us in making better decisions, and how we can apply them in our lives:
1. Seek God's Peace Before Making a Decision (Philippians 4:6-7)
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
When faced with uncertainty, the first step is to bring everything to God in prayer. As Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, instead of allowing anxiety to cloud our judgment, we are invited to seek God's peace. This peace acts as a guard over our hearts and minds, helping us discern His will in every decision.
2. Recognize Your Limitations and Seek God’s Wisdom (2 Chronicles 20:12-15)
“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
King Jehoshaphat’s prayer in 2 Chronicles highlights the importance of acknowledging our limitations. He faced a massive army and didn’t know what to do, but he sought God's guidance. This same approach can be applied to our decisions—turning to God in humility when we don’t have all the answers and trusting Him to fight our battles.
3. Count the Cost (Luke 14:28, Luke 14:31)
"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?"
Before making major decisions, Jesus teaches the importance of planning and counting the cost. Whether it's financial, emotional, or spiritual, taking the time to assess what’s required of us helps us avoid rash decisions.
4. Avoid Rash Decisions (Proverbs 20:25)
"It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one's vows."
Proverbs 20:25 warns against making hasty commitments without proper thought. Often, when we rush into decisions without consulting God or seeking wise counsel, we find ourselves in situations that are hard to undo. This scripture reminds us to slow down and evaluate the long-term impact of our decisions.
5. Lack of Knowledge Leads to Poor Decisions (Hosea 4:6)
"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge."
God emphasizes the importance of knowledge and wisdom when it comes to decision-making. Many poor choices stem from a lack of understanding. To avoid this, we must seek wisdom through scripture, prayer, and trusted advisors.
6. Look Beyond Appearances (1 Samuel 16:7)
"The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
When making decisions, it's easy to focus on what looks good on the surface. But God sees beyond appearances and looks at the heart. When faced with choices, we must strive to discern what is truly right, not just what seems appealing.
7. Trust God's Plans Over Your Own (Proverbs 16:25)
"There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death."
Not all that seems right aligns with God’s perfect will. This verse cautions us against relying solely on our instincts. While something may appear good at first glance, we must compare it to the wisdom of scripture to ensure it aligns with God's plan.
8. Prepare and Seek Counsel (Proverbs 11:14, Proverbs 27:12)
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety."
Seeking godly counsel before making a decision is crucial. Proverbs emphasizes that wise decisions are often made with the help of others. When we surround ourselves with those who know God’s Word and seek His will, they can help guide us away from poor choices and into God’s best for us.
9. God’s Word is Your Ultimate Guide (Isaiah 55:11)
"So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."
God’s Word never fails. When we base our decisions on scripture, we align ourselves with His divine purpose. Isaiah 55:11 reminds us that His Word accomplishes His will, and when we let it guide our choices, we can trust the outcome.
10. Be Humble and Open to God’s Will (2 Corinthians 10:12, Psalm 139:5)
"So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!"
Humility is key in decision-making. No matter how certain we feel about a choice, we must always remain open to God's direction and correction. Psalm 139:5 reminds us that God is with us in every step, guiding us from behind and before.
11. Evaluate the Long-term Impact (Acts 27:9-10, Acts 27:21)
In Acts 27, Paul warned of impending disaster, but his advice was ignored. The consequences were disastrous for everyone involved. Paul’s experience teaches us to consider the long-term consequences of our choices and to heed wise counsel.
Conclusion: Trusting God in Every Decision
Making better decisions isn’t about having all the answers; it's about relying on God for direction. As we navigate the complexities of life, we must remember to seek His guidance, stay rooted in His Word, and remain humble. His wisdom will light our path and help us make choices that honor Him and lead to lasting peace.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I come before You with a humble heart, seeking Your wisdom and guidance. In every decision I face, big or small, help me to trust in You fully. Your Word says to be anxious for nothing, but instead, to bring everything to You in prayer. So today, I lay my decisions at Your feet, asking for Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard my heart and mind (Philippians 4:6-7).
Lord, I know that on my own, I cannot always see clearly. Just as King Jehoshaphat admitted, “I do not know what to do, but my eyes are on You” (2 Chronicles 20:12). I confess my need for Your direction and Your strength. Help me to discern Your will, not relying on what appears good or right in the moment, but always seeking the deeper truth You see.
Father, teach me to count the cost of my decisions wisely (Luke 14:28), and guide me to seek wise counsel from those who walk with You (Proverbs 11:14). Keep me from making rash or impulsive choices and guard me from the pitfalls of ignorance (Proverbs 20:25, Hosea 4:6).
Lord, Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). Let it be the guide I follow in every step. May Your plans and purposes be fulfilled in my life, and may I never lean solely on my own understanding, but always trust in You to direct my steps (Proverbs 16:25).
Thank You for being the God who sees beyond appearances, who knows the heart, and who cares for my every need. Lead me in Your truth, and help me to walk in the confidence that Your Word will never return void (Isaiah 55:11). I trust that as I surrender my choices to You, You will bring about what is good and right in Your perfect timing.
In Jesus' name, I pray.
Amen.
